Is your hosting letting you down?

Posted on December 18, 2021 at 3:41 pm

Every website that is built needs to be hosted somewhere. Websites are hosted on servers and it is where all the files are stored. When someone visits your website, the server is called upon to access the files which contain information as to how the website looks and functions as well as all the content. The hosting can either be on a physical server located somewhere or up in the cloud meaning the website is called from different places as and when needed. You can opt to have a dedicated server which only contains your website or sites on or your can have a shared server where other people’s website may also be hosted. There are advantages and disadvantages to both and a dedicated server will of course cost more but you may have more control over it.

If you find that your website keeps going offline for no apparent reason, it is likely to be your hosting. You first need to check why it is going offline. It may be that the site is receiving a lot of traffic and the server can’t cope. If this is the case then cloud hosting may be what you need.

Facebook for your business

Posted on November 10, 2021 at 9:01 pm

There are so many ways in which you can market your business online. Social media marketing through Facebook can be a great tool for businesses that want to reach a new audience or simply stay in touch with their customers. Not only do you want to promote your Facebook page within Facebook but also externally on your website, business cards and even on your sign written vehicles.

When someone first lands on your Facebook page it is important that it looks professional. Try and think about what photo you are going to use as your cover photo and check how it displays not only on your computer but also your phone and tablet. Make sure that your description or welcoming paragraph sums up what you do but in an interesting way. If you sell products you may want to list them on your Facebook under the shop area.

Photos are a must for a successful Facebook page. Categorise these photos, if possible, to allow the views to go straight to the ones they are interested in.

When your page first goes live, be sure to ask as many friends as possible and family members to like it.

Is there still a place for micro sites?

Posted on August 4, 2021 at 4:37 pm

So many businesses have ventured into the world of online marketing following the Covid outbreak. For many, it was the only way they were able to continue to trade and make any money.

If you are a business owner then you may have heard of the term micros sites. Micros sites have, over the years, been used for a number of different things. Some larger organisations still use micro sites today if they want to section their business off in to separate areas. So what exactly is a micro site and should you be creating them?

A micro site is usually a 2-3 page mini website that has information on it that is very relevant to a specific topic or product. Often the micro site will link back to the main website to gain traffic that way too. They can be useful if you have more information than you want to fit on one [age of your site or if you want to push a product or service without it being buried within others that may be on the site already. It can also work really well for other forms of marketing.

Micros sites can sometimes be used for marketing campaigns such as Google Adwords or for offline advertising in a newspaper for example. Google Adwords works well if the page the ad is linked to is highly themed around that topic. This will then mean that the cost per click is lower and also the conversion rate should be higher.

How to keep users interested in your blog

Posted on June 9, 2021 at 12:11 pm

If you have a blog website, then the most important thing is traffic. It may be that you charge a fee for companies or businesses to advertise on your blog and this is only successful if you can prove you have a lot of traffic coming to the site. No one will want to pay to advertise on a website that doesn’t have any visitors.

Even if your blog is free to view and free to advertise on, you may be sharing important information that you want others to rad, so distribution is vital. Once you have created a blog you need to get people interested in it so they have a reason to return back and read new posts. It may be that it is a sort of diary and each day or week you add a new post talking about a journey you are on. Lots of people start blogs when they go travelling or when they are embarking on a medical journey such as cancer treatment as this can help others who may be in a similar situation.

You need to ensure that you advertise your blog. Social media site such as Facebook and Twitter are great for this. You can advertise your blog site but also put on links and updates when you have a new post available. You may use your blog as a way of reviewing products or giving fashion tips. As long as you have up to date information and present it in a fun and interesting way, you should have a good number of loyal followers.

Shared hosting advantages and disadvantages

Posted on March 25, 2021 at 11:17 am

All websites need to be hosted on a server. This may be a physical server in your office, a server offsite or even abroad or a server in the cloud. There are a number of different options when it comes to choosing your hosting package for your website and it is important that you understand the differences between them.

The most common type of hosting for most small – medium sized websites is shared hosting. This means your website files are stored and pulled from a server which also hosts a number of other websites. If you have more than one website you may decide to buy or lease a dedicated server but put all your sites on one. This means they will all have the same IP address.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using shared hosting. One of the main advantages is that the cost is usually a lot cheaper than a dedicated server. The host will maintain the server in terms of updates to hardware and software and so there is very little for you to have to do. The disadvantages of shared hosting is the fact that you don’t have as much say over what settings are used on the server and what other sites can be hosted on there. IF you end up sharing with a site that gets reported for being spammy or where the owners use the server to send out mass mailings, you may find that your site gets tared with the same brush and even blacklisted.

Does your website keep going offline?

Posted on February 3, 2021 at 12:21 pm

Your website might be vital to you running your business. Especially at the moment, as many companies can only trade online due to lockdown restrictions. If you find that your website keeps going offline you need to find out why and fix it as soon as possible.

If your website is going online and then back on again randomly then it is likely that the problem is with your hosting. The first thing you need to do is contact your hosting company and ask them to investigate what is happening. When your website is set up on a hosting account, it may be put on to a shared server. This means there may be hundreds of other sites that have no affiliation to yours on the same server. The issue is that if there is a problem with one of the other sites that are hosted on the same server, it may well take yours offline too. This can be frustrating and cause you to lose business through no fault of your own. Another reason that your website hosting may go down is if you have exceeded a bandwidth limit. If you have a sudden spike in traffic your site may go temporary offline. Using cloud hosting can help prevent this as it calls for the extra space when needed.
